Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to provide information about how to communicate with individuals with alcohol & substance use disorders and other behavioral addictions, the conceptual frameworks in the literature on addiction, the negative consequences of addiction, and basic psychotherapy approaches and strategies to cope with addiction.
Course Objective: Addictions are “preventable” diseases if preventive measures and awareness-raising studies are carried out. It is planned for students to specialize in addiction prevention, counseling, and individualized addiction therapy through theoretical training and case studies.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge (Described as Theoritical and/or Factual Knowledge.)
  1) Basic concepts and definitions; types of addiction; causes of addiction; risk factors in family, peer group and social context that prepare the individual for alcohol & substance addiction and behavioral addiction; communication skills in dependent children, adolescents and adults; addiction prevention effort; application of basic psychotherapy approaches in addiction treatment; readjustment process.
Skills (Describe as Cognitive and/or Practical Skills.)
  1) To introduce the theories in clinical observation and interview, and to gain observation and interview skills required in clinical evaluation and psychotherapy processes in addiction treatment.
Competences (Described as "Ability of the learner to apply knowledge and skills autonomously with responsibility", "Learning to learn"," Communication and social" and "Field specific" competences.)
  1) Students who successfully complete this course; will be able to explain observation and interview skills based on basic psychotherapy theories in addiction treatment.
