Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: This 1-credit asynchronous Business English course aims to equip university students from various departments (such as Nursing, Dentistry, Digital Game Design, Physical Therapy, Psychology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Gastronomy, Business Management, etc.) with essential business communication skills in English. The course focuses on workplace communication, professional writing, negotiation, presentations, and cultural awareness to enhance students’ proficiency in professional settings.
Course Objective: Objectives:
By the end of this asynchronous Business English course, students will be able to:
1. Communicate Professionally – Develop clear, polite, and effective written and spoken communication skills for business settings.
2. Write Business Documents – Produce professional emails, CVs, cover letters, reports, and business proposals using appropriate tone and structure.
3. Engage in Business Interactions – Participate effectively in workplace conversations, meetings, and negotiations with culturally appropriate communication strategies.
4. Enhance Presentation & Networking Skills – Deliver structured presentations and build professional relationships through effective networking strategies.
5. Understand Workplace Ethics & Culture – Apply ethical decision-making and cross-cultural communication skills in diverse business environments.

  2) Week 2: Professional Email Writing • Reading: “Email Writing: How to Write Effective Business Emails” – A guide on structuring and phrasing professional emails. • How to write an informal email in a professional tone.
  3) • Week 3: Workplace Communication & Politeness Strategies • Video Lecture: “Making Requests and Giving Feedback” – A video lesson on polite communication strategies in the workplace. • How to write polite requests. & Cultural differences in workplace communication.
  4) Week 4: Writing a CV & Cover Letter • Reading: “Key Components of CVs and Cover Letters” – An article detailing essential elements of effective CVs and cover letters. • CV or cover letter for an internship. & Providing feedback on a classmate’s CV.
  5) Week 5: Business Meetings & Discussions • Video Lecture: “Business Meeting Etiquette and Phrases” – A video covering proper conduct and useful phrases for business meetings. •Write a meeting agenda and minutes. & Challenges in virtual meetings.
  6) Week 6: Negotiation Skills • Reading: “Key Negotiation Tactics” – An article outlining effective strategies for business negotiations. • Draft a negotiation email. & What makes a successful negotiator? 6.
