Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: Istanbul - Metropolis II: Diachronic Sections aims at a chronological reading and interpretation of the physical and historical strata of Istanbul from the Byzantine to the modern period through observation and research excursions. The diachronic sections of Istanbul are not on the top of each other, but are side by side as continuities or breaks with the topography. They are also a part of the past and current urban dynamics, physical structuring and social structuring in Istanbul. Therefore, rather than reading the history of the city on a map with only visible, fixed layers, the course envisions encountering the city as a living organism. It offers to experience the city on foot with its invisible layers and present-day dynamics as a part of daily life, insisting on being a corporeal body in the city, visiting the historical buildings and cityscapes of various periods, to keep the record of observations as autobiographical narratives. Excursions take place on three main axes: the Byzantine and Constantinopolitan period; the early and late Ottoman period and the early Republic and modern period. The course starts with introductory seminars to read the macroform of Istanbul in general. Then, introductory seminars are followed by a series of excursions /field trips as Istanbul Walks, led by guest specialists in the different periods.
Course Objective: • To recognize the pluralistic character of Istanbul as a metropolitan city.
• To read the physical-historical layers of Istanbul in-situ.
• To relate urban transformations and interventions with architectural, cultural and social context of the city.
• To examine the impact of growth on the city.

• To be able to quickly read and interpret a city they meet for the first time.
• To comprehense a city physically, sensorially and sensually.
• To experience the city as a walking body.
• To record the urban observation and experience with different means of representation producing situated knowledge.
• To explore the city with different means of expression.
