Course Objectives: |
Studio I: Encounters is an interior design studio in which freshmen explore their individual and collective potentials by making by hand through actions during the first semester of their design education. The studio aims to investigate various materials and mediums, manifold ways of making and systems, to get familiar with them, to explore their behaviors and capabilities, performances, limits and potentials tactually. It asks to be curious, to slow down, to look closely, to touch, to think deeply, to ask questions to oneself, things, each other and the place by doing, to arose all senses. Encounters, as a research group, has a pedagogical approach where the distinction between student and instruction disappears and everyone works collaboratively, and learns from each other: experiments, trials, experiences and discussions. The results are thus not end products but potential parts of a new journey that has just begun: thinking by making and through matter, slowness and hands-on learning, trial and error method, process, bodily experience, observation and discussion, autobiographical narratives and recordings of experience. Its main motivation is to learn to learn [by repetition and by making].
The studio is made up of various sub-modules where different materials and methods, ways of making and systems are experienced. It establishes a relationship with the matter of things, nature and the world. These modules may differ according to the first year studio’s organization. Material, technique and system researches are transformed into a sharing environment with studio seminars and workshops and other studio experiences simultaneously.

Course Objective: |
• To gain courage to design.
• To discover and develop manual skills by making by hand.
• To explore the possibilities of various materials and techniques: To experiment with how the material transforms and changes, how it responds to different techniques.
• To recognize the material tactually.
• To get familiar with open source design and manufacturer platforms.
•To get to know different designers and small-scale producer organizations in the city.
• To meet manifold small-scale producer groups and designers and to get involved in dynamic design networks in the city. |
