Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: This Introduction to Short Story in English is designed to nurture an appreciation and understanding of the short story form. Throughout the course, critical elements such as plot, character development, setting, theme, and narrative voice will be explored by reading and analysing various short stories from multiple authors and eras. The curriculum encourages the development of critical thinking skills through in-depth discussions and close reading exercises, emphasising how these elements contribute to the overall meaning and impact of distinct examples within the genre. Ultimately, this course aims to equip students with the tools to interpret and analyse short stories while inspiring a lifelong passion for reading and exploring diverse perspectives.
Course Objective: The course focuses on studying the short story genre and its characteristics and possibilities. Students will gain an understanding of crucial storytelling elements such as plot, character development, setting, theme, and narrative voice. Students will read and analyse various short stories from different authors and periods, enhancing their critical thinking skills. Discussions will facilitate the exploration of deeper meanings and cultural contexts of the stories read. Close reading exercises will be utilised to analyse how authors employ language to create effects. Overall, the course emphasises the significance of short stories in literature and their capacity to offer insight into diverse human experiences.

  1) By the end of this course, students will be able to: - Identify and analyse the key elements of short story writing, including plot structure, characterisation, setting, point of view, theme, symbolism, and style.
  2) Demonstrate critical reading skills by closely examining and interpreting a diverse range of short stories from different authors, cultural contexts, and historical periods, enriching the understanding of literature and broadening literary knowledge.
  3) Engage in thoughtful discussions about the literary and social significance of the selected short stories, exploring their themes, ideas, and cultural contexts.
  4) Develop practical communication skills by articulating their interpretations and analyses of short stories through oral and written communication.
  5) Appreciate the artistry and impact of the short story form as a powerful means of exploring the human condition and expressing complex ideas.
