Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: The aim of the course is to introduce students to the literature on the various forms of the state and related institutions, state-society relations and political behaviour and to provide an introduction to the main theoretical and methodological debates in this literature. In addition, the students are expected to be able to make a comparison between the main approaches and methodologies on the subject and to be familiarised with the political experiences of countries in different regions.
Course Objective: After an introduction to the concepts, the similarities and differences between various political systems will be emphasised. In this course, the main areas of interest in political science will be analysed from a comparative perspective. State-society relations, parliaments and governments, democratic institutions, policy-making processes, political parties and party systems, electoral systems, centre-local region relations and political culture will be discussed. Western, non-western, democratic and authoritarian systems will be analysed comparatively. Each week, political systems will be discussed from different theoretical and methodological perspectives.

  3) To be able to explain democratic and authoritarian systems comparatively from the theoretical and methodological perspective.
