Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: To acquire knowledge about Ottoman palaces in terms of their architectural structure, decorative details, and functional spaces, in order to comprehend how the Ottoman state organization is reflected in architecture.
Course Objective: To acquire knowledge of the architectural structures, decorative details, and functional spaces of Ottoman palaces, to understand the changes experienced across historical periods, and to comprehend the reflection of the Ottoman state organization in architecture.

  1) Defines the position of Ottoman palaces among the palaces of the world.
  2) Distinguishes between the concepts of pavilion (köşk), kiosk (kasır), and palace (saray).
  3) Lists the daily utilitarian objects and artworks featured in Ottoman palaces.

  1) Analyses the spatial components that constitute Turkish palace architecture.
  2) Evaluates the architectural spaces of Topkapı Palace through visual materials.
  3) Compares the historical development of Ottoman palaces through decorative details.
  4) Correlates the Ottoman palace organisation with its architectural structure.
  5) Performs visual–spatial matching exercises related to Ottoman palaces.
