Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: The Cinematic Space course is related to the investigation of the possibilities and probabilities of representing space, spatial experiments and/or experiences in a film. The aim of the course is to analyze the morphological characteristics of spaces that structure and represent human-human, human-object, human-space-environment interactions in film. The concepts and tools that constitute the design practices of any film (script/narrative, storyboard, mise-en-scene, cinematography, montage and editing) constitute the theoretical framework of this analysis. The dramatic visualization of the film's story (script) depends on the deliberate and systematic movements of the camera apparatus (determined by the director). The shooting plan and program reveal the interaction between [physical] space, time and body/character/object configuration. The resulting moving images (sequences) are designed forms of representation of spatio-temporal practices. Students will examine the theories and practices related to these forms of representation through various film examples. By watching films or excerpts from films, reading articles and texts in accordance with the course syllabus, students will come to understand that film is also an apparatus for critical reflection. As Author director Jean Luc Godard said, cinema is not only a means of seeing, but also a means of thinking. The collaboration between director and architect also means the development of a critical gaze.
The methodology followed for the course constitutes a film design experiment consisting of three main phases: Research, experimentation and design.
Course Objective: The aim of the course is to provide students with a phenomenological and perceptual understanding of physical and/or virtual space. It is aimed to understand the functional interaction between the representation of space in films and the practices of designing and constructing space.
Mode of Delivery: Face to face
