Course Objectives: | Cities have a dynamic structure in which various practices, relations, productions and movements are part of daily life beyond the physical and structural elements creating them. It is necessary to understand and experience the city with its daily practices, social, cultural and economic characteristics, which are indispensable parts. Throughout history and today, Istanbul has been a city that produces and is intertwined with production. Within the scope of the course, it is aimed to look closely and explore the production spaces in various scales and characteristics located in the city center and its periphery. Istanbul accomodates manifold production practices - different scales and spaces, from artisanal production to workshop scale and mass production. The design practice unique to Istanbul also requires being closely related to the production areas and modes of production in the city. Instead of a didactic and ready-made information and learning approach, it is aimed to keep a record of individual discoveries with many tools, mediums and methods during the excursions to the different production spaces in the city at the semester. After each excursion, joint discussions and evaluations are made on the recorded and produced knowledge. Every spatial exploration also involves each student's discovery of himself, his own interest and approach. Seeing and experiencing various scales, from the city to the workshop and even to the material, together in the excursions made allow for multidimensional thinking, perception and conceptualization. For practices such as architecture, interior architecture and other design disciplines for making, producing, material, city, space and thinking, getting down to the basis of practice, encountering the states and sections in the city one-on-one, touching and collecting materials, examining different production forms, spaces, products, listening to sounds, to witness the city closely by following the smells, textures and chatting with a tradesman, to produce our own experiences and knowledge; and to take this encounter as early as possible, to his student years. |
Course Objective: | • To recognize the multi-layered structure of the city of Istanbul • To read the multi-layered structure of Istanbul from the perspective of production spaces and practices and within the context • To get to know the diverse and different production spaces in Istanbul's city center and its periphery • To be able to compare different production spaces and scales with each other • To understand, explore and experience the city, and therefore its indispensable part of daily practices and life, without separating it from its cityscapes and architectural structures • To grasp the production spaces both in physical and daily life, with their social, economic and cultural dimensions and production practices • To observe and experience these places in very different scales and between scales such as cities, streets, inns, bazaars, shops, workshops, production and materials • To gain the ability to quickly read and interpret a city or place they first encounter • To read the city on foot through synchronic sections, meeting with the actors of the production space, understanding the city, production spaces and production in different depths by examining the materials and production processes • To be able to read the city on the map • To be able to transfer the experienced routes on the map with different methods • To visualize and relate the multidimensional knowledge and experience about the visited production spaces and their forms by inscriptive and visual mapping • To comprehense a city physically, sensorially and sensually • To record urban observation and experience with different means of representation, producing situated knowledge • To explore the city with different means of expression • To be able to do multiple readings in the city • To find and produce visible and legible information that is original and implicit in the context of the city • To be able to pursue one's own interest and curiosity, to create one's own experience • To create a chart, a catalogue through collecting samples related the production space |
