Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: To understand the critical periods in the history of Britain from Anglo-Saxon period to the present with a focus on major political, social, cultural, religious and artistic developments.
Course Objective: Acquire intercultural competence through extending systematic knowledge and understanding of Britain’s cultural heritage since the early middle-age.

Learning Outcomes

  1) understand the major political, social, and intellectual developments in British history, from the Anglo-Saxon period to contemporary times.
  2) critically examine and interpret key cultural trends, movements, and symbols within their specific historical and social contexts
  3) recognise how British culture has been shaped by and has, in turn, influenced other global cultures, particularly within the context of the British Empire and its post-colonial legacy
  4) examine how concepts of national, racial, and ethnic identity have been historically constructed and have evolved in Britain, particularly in relation to the British Empire and patterns of immigration
  5) understand the historical significance of social class in Britain and analyse its pervasive influence on cultural practices, language, education, and social mobility.
  6) identify and critically analyse the contributions and experiences of diverse and often-marginalised groups—including women, people of color, and immigrant communities—in shaping British culture
