Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: Explains the broader social, political, cultural, spatial, historical, and philosophical implications of the utopian and dystopian thought in a range of literary and cultural texts.
Course Objective: Understanding utopian and dystopian narratives by addressing particular topics such as democracy, free will, gender, identity, capitalism, imperialism, climate change, reproductive rights, terrorism, and state violence.

  1) to develop skills in textual and contextual reading of utopian and dystopian fiction
  2) apply critical reasoning to utopian/dystopian fiction

  4) explain how utopian/dystopian fiction addresses themes in relation to idealism, equality, free-will, justice, and power
  5) understand how a utopian and idealistic vision can be corrupted in distinct time and context
