Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the rich historical heritage, cultural fabric, and developmental processes of Istanbul, the city where they live and work. Through a multidisciplinary examination of Istanbul from geographical, sociological, historical, architectural, literary, and aesthetic perspectives spanning from ancient times to the present, the course seeks to enable students to develop a more qualified and conscious relationship with the city.
Course Objective: Knowledge and Understanding:

Comprehend Istanbul's historical development processes from ancient times to the present
Analyze the city's transformations during the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods
Understand the historical significance of Istanbul's geographical position and changing boundaries
Track changes in the city's demographic, cultural, and social structures

Analytical Skills:

Analyze relationships between urban history and literature, art, and architecture
Evaluate the impact of urban legends, myths, and cultural memory on the city's identity
Interpret contemporary Istanbul's challenges (migration, urbanization, earthquakes, etc.) within historical context
Examine the influence of architects and urban planners on the city from a critical perspective

Application and Synthesis:

Develop skills in thinking, discussing, and writing about urban spaces
Evaluate everyday spaces encountered in daily life from a historical perspective
Develop informed views and proposals regarding Istanbul's future
Acquire a worldview that encompasses urban life

1) Week 1: Introduction and Course Information
2) Week 2: What is a City? Where Does It Come From? Where is Istanbul? A brief overview of urbanization history will be given, discussing the names Istanbul has taken throughout history and Istanbul's changing position and boundaries.
3) Week 3: Archaeology and the City's Archaic Past The ancient life of Istanbul will be examined by referencing settlements in and around Istanbul and currently ongoing excavations.
4) Week 4: Rome and Byzantium: What Are They, What Are They Not? The transformation of Istanbul's appearance from the Roman Empire to the Byzantine Empire will be examined in terms of monuments built, urbanization, and cultural heritage.
5) Week 5: Istanbul in Legends From Istanbul's founding legends to the twentieth century, many urban legends and folktales that have been influential in Istanbul's social life will be discussed in the context of forming the city's identity.
6) Week 6: Ottoman Istanbul (1453-1703) The urban interventions made to the city with the conquest of Istanbul and the Ottomanization of Istanbul, changes in its population, developments in the cultural field, and dynamic social life will be addressed.
7) Week 7: Ottoman Istanbul (1703-1923) This week, which will examine the city's transformation and change during the Ottoman modernization process, will particularly focus on architectural discussions in the context of Ottoman baroque architecture and palaces.
8) Week 8: Pera - Galata: Another City, Another Architecture The history of Pera-Galata, which actually remains outside Istanbul's boundaries but is an inseparable part of the city, will be addressed from the pre-Roman Sycai settlement to the present day.
9) Week 9: Istanbul in the Early Years of the Republic How did the effects of moving the capital to Ankara affect Istanbul? Could it break free from occupied Istanbul? What developments did Republican Istanbul witness?
10) Week 10: Istanbul in Literature From Byzantine poetry to divan literature, from early novels to theater plays, the image of Istanbul had gained an important place in literature and cultural memory. This week, the relationship between Istanbul and literature will be examined through some reading passages.
11) Week 11: Contemporary Istanbul: Migration, Urbanization, Earthquake From the Second World War years to the period of rural-to-urban migration, from arabesque culture to irregular urbanization and earthquake preparations, the city's recent history will be examined.
12) 12. Hafta: Sinema ve Çağdaş Sanatta İstanbul imgesi Edebiyatta olduğu gibi İstanbul’un güçlü imgesi kendisine sinemada, çağdaş sanatta, ve hatta görsel iletişimde de yer bulmuştur. Belli başlı eserler üzerinden, İstanbul’un görsel gücü tartışılacak, belleğimizdeki yeri irdelenecektir.
13) Week 13: Istanbul of Architects and Planners Those who make a city are those who live there. But where do architects and planners fit into this? What are their effects on the city? To what extent have they been able to and wanted to leave their own traces on the city? The Istanbul of architects and planners from the late 19th century to the present will be discussed.
14) Week 14: Istanbul-Today-Tomorrow A summary of the entire period and a discussion about Istanbul's future.
