Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Istanbul's historical journey from archaic times to the present, examining the city's social, cultural, architectural, and artistic dimensions. By approaching the multi-layered structure of the city from geographical, sociological, and historical perspectives, it aims to enable students to establish a more qualified relationship with the city they live in.
Course Objective: Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

Analyze the historical development of Istanbul chronologically.
Compare the social, cultural, and architectural characteristics of the city across different periods.
Evaluate the literary and artistic representations of Istanbul.
Discuss the significant turning points in the city's history.
Interpret the geographical, sociological, and historical layers of the city.
Analyze current urban issues of Istanbul.
Develop solutions for the future challenges of the city.

  1) Upon completion of this course, the student: Explains the historical periods of Istanbul chronologically. Defines the significant events in the city's history. Distinguishes architectural works from different periods. Shows examples of literary and artistic representations of the city. Explains the social and cultural transformation of the city with examples. Lists the urban problems of modern Istanbul. Presents solutions for urban planning.

2) What is a city? Where does it come from? Where is Istanbul? Brief introduction to urbanization history, discussion of Istanbul's names throughout history and its changing position and boundaries.
3) Archaeology and the city's archaic past Discussion of Istanbul's ancient life through references to settlements around Istanbul and ongoing excavations.
4) Rome and Byzantium, what it is and isn't Examination of Istanbul's transformation from the Roman Empire to the Byzantine Empire, focusing on monuments, urbanization, and cultural heritage.
5) Istanbul in Legends Discussion of urban myths and legends that influenced Istanbul's social life from its founding myths to the twentieth century, in the context of forming the city's identity.
6) Ottoman Istanbul (1453-1703) Coverage of urban interventions after Istanbul's conquest, its Ottomanization, population changes, cultural developments, and dynamic social life.
7) Ottoman Istanbul (1703-1923) Examination of the city's transformation during Ottoman modernization, with architectural discussions focusing on Ottoman baroque architecture and palaces. Optional field trip may be organized.
8) Pera - Galata: Another city, another architecture History of Pera-Galata from pre-Roman Sycae settlement to present day, though technically outside Istanbul's boundaries but an integral part of the city.
9) Istanbul in the Early Republican Years How did moving the capital to Ankara affect Istanbul? Did it recover from occupation? What developments did Republican Istanbul witness?
10) Istanbul in Literature Examination of Istanbul's image in literature from Byzantine poetry to divan literature, early novels, and plays, through selected readings.
11) Çağdaş İstanbul: Göç, Kentleşme, Deprem İkinci Dünya Savaşı yıllarından, köyden kente göç dönemine, arabesk kültürden, çarpık kentleşme ve deprem hazırlıklarına, şehrin yakın tarihine mercek tutulacaktır.
12) Istanbul's Image in Cinema and Contemporary Art Discussion of Istanbul's powerful image in cinema, contemporary art, and visual communication through major works.
13) Architects' and Planners' Istanbul Discussion of architects' and planners' influence on the city, particularly from the late 19th century to present day.
14) Istanbul-Today-Tomorrow Summary of the entire period and discussion about Istanbul's future.
