Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to enable students to critically analyze the historical evolution, theoretical foundations, and contemporary orientations of Turkish foreign policy. Students will evaluate Turkey’s foreign policy decisions through the lens of international relations theories, interpret its relations with regional and global actors, and develop independent analyses by engaging with diplomatic documents and academic literature.
Course Objective: This course aims to equip students with the ability to analyze the historical evolution, theoretical foundations, and contemporary orientations of Turkish foreign policy; to evaluate Turkey’s foreign policy decisions through international relations theories; to interpret its relations with regional and global actors; and to develop independent analyses using academic sources.

  1) Theoretical Learning Outcomes 1. Analyses the historical evolution of Turkish foreign policy within the framework of international relations theories. 2. Evaluates foreign policy decision-making processes through major theoretical approaches such as realism, liberalism, and constructivism. 3. Interprets the orientations of Turkish foreign policy with a critical perspective by linking them to theoretical models. 4. Discusses the impact of systemic changes in international politics on Turkish foreign policy from a theoretical standpoint. (Factual/Empirical Learning Outcomes) 1. Identifies the periodic transformations in Turkish foreign policy based on historical documents and events. 2. Explains Turkey’s relations with key foreign policy actors (e.g., the US, EU, Russia, Middle Eastern countries) in a historical context. 3. Analyses foreign policy documents, official statements, and diplomatic developments to identify current trends. 4. Evaluates the internal and external dynamics shaping Turkish foreign policy through concrete examples.

Assesses current developments in Turkish foreign policy through the lens of historical continuity and change. Practical Learning Outcomes 1. Conducts foreign policy analyses using maps, documents, and visual materials. 2. Synthesises information from academic sources to produce written analyses in the context of foreign policy. 3. Compares different foreign policy perspectives through group work and classroom discussions. 4. Interprets Turkey’s foreign policy strategies by following current diplomatic developments. 5. Develops alternative solutions through case studies related to foreign policy issues.
