Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: Introduction to Mythology offers a comprehensive exploration of mythological traditions across the world, examining their origins, structures, and meanings. The course investigates how myths function as cultural narratives that shape collective identity, moral order, and artistic imagination. Through the study of Greek, Roman, Norse, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Asian, and Turkish mythologies, students will gain insight into recurring archetypes, symbolic patterns, and their lasting impact on literature and culture.
Course Objective: - Identify and describe major myths, deities, and archetypes from diverse world mythologies.
- Analyze symbolic structures, recurring motifs, and cultural meanings of myths.
- Compare and contrast mythological traditions to uncover shared human concerns.
- Interpret mythic narratives in their historical, religious, and cultural contexts.
- Discuss the influence of mythology on modern literature, psychology, and the arts.

3) Week 3 - Greek Mythology I: The Olympians - Major gods and goddesses; Zeus, Hera, Athena, Apollo; cosmic order and divine hierarchy.
4) Week 4 - Greek Mythology II: Heroes and Mortals - The hero’s journey; Perseus, Heracles, Theseus; hubris and moral lessons.
5) Week 5 - Roman Mythology - Adaptations of Greek myths; Virgil’s Aeneid; Aeneas as a cultural hero.
6) Week 6 - Norse Mythology - The gods of Asgard; Yggdrasil and Ragnarök; Poetic Edda and Prose Edda.
7) Week 7 - Egyptian and Mesopotamian Myths - Osiris and Isis; The Epic of Gilgamesh; immortality and divine kingship.

10) Week 10 - Myth and Ritual - Frazer and Eliade on myth and sacred time; the role of ritual in cultural continuity.
11) Week 11 - Asian Mythologies - Hindu creation myths; the Ramayana and Mahabharata; Chinese mythic cosmology.
12) Week 12 - Turkish and Central Asian Mythologies - Tengriism, Ergenekon legend, the Grey Wolf (Bozkurt) motif, and mythic origins of Turkic identity.
13) Week 13 - Myth and Identity - Gender, power, and identity; feminist and postcolonial readings of myth.
14) Week 14 - Contemporary Uses of Myth - Myth in modern literature, cinema, and digital storytelling.
15) Week 15 - Final Exam / Course Wrap-Up - Review and synthesis of key mythological themes.
