Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: This course explores the literary representations of Istanbul from the early republican times (1930’s) to present day (2000’s). Focusing on the intersection of history, politics, culture, and identity, we will examine how different writers in the different periods narrate Istanbul, with all of its cultural and ethnic diversity.
Students will be able to examine how Istanbul has been described as a city of modernity, tradition, diversity, and social change. By analysing a variety of literary texts, (novels, short stories, poems and memoirs) students will gain insight into how literature has represented the stories of Istanbul across different decades.
During the course, we will examine how İstanbul is represented by variety of writers such as Nazım Hikmet, Sait Faik Abasıyanık, Sabahattin Ali, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Fikret Adil, Sevim Burak, Yusuf Atılgan, Tezer Özlü, İlhan Berk, Leyla Erbil, Latife Tekin, Lale Müldür and Orhan Pamuk.
In addition to fiction writers, we will make use of memoirs and non-fiction works on the history and culture of Istanbul.
At the end, students will be able to critically analyze different literary representations of Istanbul in modern Turkish literature.

Course Objective: This course aims to pursue discussions on modernism in Turkey through the lens of literature.
