Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: The aim of the course is to enable the students to know the concept of trauma and trauma-related disorders in details, and to gain the basic knowledge and skills of being a trauma-sensitive clinician.
Course Objective: Within the scope of trauma psychology course, the aim is for students to know the concept of trauma, its types, traumatic reactions, to know the historical development of trauma, to know the genetic - biological-cultural dimensions of trauma, to know the theories of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) belonging to different schools, to comprehend trauma and related disorders, to know their differential and comorbid diagnoses, cognitive model, the concepts of secondary trauma and post-traumatic growth, to know the effects of trauma and close relationships, to have theoretical knowledge about trauma-sensitive psychological support, and to recognize the therapy methods from different schools used in the treatment of all trauma - trauma-related disorders.

  1) Explain the meaning, scope and function of the concept of trauma. Lists the classes and types of traumatic events. Analyze the psychological effects of traumatic events. Explain the psychological symptoms seen after the traumatic event. Explain the symptoms seen in children and adolescents after the traumatic event. Compares individual differences in traumatic symptoms.
  2) Recalls the historical development of the concept of trauma. The history of trauma describes the events and important people of the "Age of Hysteria". Trauma history “I. Explains the events and important developments of the World War II Period. The history of trauma explains the events and important developments of the “Period of Sexual Nervosis”. Criticizes the obstacles that stand in the way of studying the concept of trauma from history to today.
  3) Explains the biological infrastructure of trauma and the biological changes caused by trauma. Explains the changes caused by trauma in the brain. Explain the effects of trauma on the endocrine system. Exemplifies relationships with trauma and culture. Recalls the importance of culture in trauma treatment. Lists cultural factors and explains concepts in coping with trauma.
  4) Explains psychoanalytic theories about trauma. Analyzes trauma within the framework of psychoanalytic theories. Explains the relationship between psychoanalytic theory and trauma. Explains the relationship between self psychology and trauma. Explains the relationship between object relations theory and trauma. Explains the relationship between involvement theories and trauma. Explains the relationship between stress response theory and trauma.
  5) Explains trauma and related behavioral theories. Explains classical conditioning and operant conditioning and trauma. Designs the relationship between bilateral learning theory and trauma treatment.
  6) Lists the cognitive theories associated with trauma. Explains trauma according to cognitive theory. Explains Hierarchical Cognitive Action Model. Explains the Sensory Processing Model. Explains the Cognitive Model. Designs the use of cognitive model in trauma treatment.
  7) Lists Feminist Theories that explain trauma. Lists the contributions of feminist theories to trauma studies. Compares the intersecting and differentiating aspects of feminist theory and other theories. Explains the focus of feminist approach and trauma studies. Uses treatments according to the feminist approach.
  8) Lists Trauma and Trigger (Stress) Related Disorders. Lists DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for Trauma and Trigger (Stress) Related Disorders. Explains the diagnostic criteria and clinical presentation of Reactive Attachment Disorder. Explain the diagnostic criteria and clinical presentation of Boundless Social Participation Disorder. Explain the diagnostic criteria and clinical presentation of Adjustment Disorders. Explain the diagnostic criteria and clinical presentation of Acute Stress Disorders. Explain the diagnostic criteria and clinical presentation of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Compares comorbidity and differential diagnosis in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
  10) Explains the concept of Secondary Traumatic Stress. Compares the concepts of primary and secondary traumatization. Lists secondary traumatic stress symptoms Exemplifies who has secondary traumatic stress. Lists the differences between secondary traumatic stress and PTSD.
  11) Explains the concept of empathy fatigue. Explains the concept of burnout. Compares the differences between empathy fatigue and burnout. Explains the concept of emotional contagion. Explains the concept of emotional distance. Explains the concept of empathy satisfaction. Lists risk factors and protective factors in empathy fatigue and burnout.
