Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: This course is designed to improve students’ grammatical accuracy and expand their professional nursing vocabulary in English. Through topics such as triage, hospital admissions, pregnancy and labour, and clinical trials, students learn to use English precisely and appropriately in healthcare contexts. The course combines focused grammar instruction with vocabulary-building activities to help future nurses communicate clearly, write accurately, and understand essential medical language in English.

Use nursing-related English vocabulary accurately in professional contexts.
Apply key English grammar structures correctly in written and spoken communication.
Understand and use common English medical abbreviations and expressions.
Produce clear and accurate written English for clinical and professional purposes.
Demonstrate improved accuracy and range in English grammar and vocabulary use.

  1) • use core triage vocabulary to identify the main complaint and urgency level (basic triage language). • ask for and confirm key patient details (name, DOB, contact) using short, polite questions. • use narrative time markers to describe what happened and when (past time sequence). • recognize and expand common admission/triage abbreviations in short notes (LO3).
  2) • conduct a short triage-style interaction (greeting, complaint, brief history, next steps). • summarize the patient’s story using narrative tenses with improved accuracy (LO2, LO5). • write a short triage note using selected abbreviations appropriately (LO3–LO4).
  3) • use hospital admission vocabulary (ward, referral, appointment, symptoms) accurately (LO1). • report what a patient said using basic reported speech forms (statements/questions). • use key collocations related to admissions (e.g., take a history, perform an exam) in context.
  4) • produce a brief admission report that includes reported information and relevant collocations (LO4). • ask follow-up questions to clarify referral information (reason for referral, previous tests). • improve grammatical accuracy in reported speech and time/tense shifts (LO2, LO5).
  5) • use obstetrics vocabulary to describe pregnancy stages and common labour-related symptoms (LO1). • give advice using modals and fixed expressions in a supportive, professional tone (LO2). • check patient understanding by using simple clarification questions and rephrasing.
  6) • role-play a nurse–patient conversation for pregnancy/labour, including advice and reassurance. • write short clinical notes focusing on advice given and patient response (LO4). • demonstrate wider range and control of advice language (LO5).
  7) • use vocabulary for medications, side effects, and trials accurately in context (LO1). • read and interpret dosage forms and basic mathematical expressions used in charts/labels (LO2). • explain side effects and precautions to a patient using clear, simple English (LO4).

  9) • describe numerical data (dose, frequency, percentages) accurately in short spoken/written tasks (LO2–LO4). • apply medication and trial vocabulary to case-based scenarios with fewer errors (LO5). • use appropriate expressions for instructions, warnings, and follow-up guidance (LO4).
  10) • use eye-condition vocabulary (symptoms, examinations) to describe problems and needs (LO1). • express ability/limitations using appropriate tense forms (can/could/be able to, etc.) (LO2). • give simple instructions for basic checks and patient positioning (LO4).
  11) • conduct a short eye-assessment dialogue and record key points clearly (LO4). • use ability language flexibly in past/present contexts with improved accuracy (LO5). • use relevant collocations and patient-friendly rephrasing in instructions (LO1, LO4).
  12) • use dermatology vocabulary to describe skin problems (location, appearance, change over time) (LO1). • modify descriptions using degree words (quite/fairly/pretty) appropriately (LO2). • understand and use selected phrasal verbs commonly found in patient advice contexts (LO2–LO5).
  13) • write a short structured description/report of a skin condition using accurate modifiers (LO4). • give patient advice using relevant phrasal verbs and clear instructions (LO4). • show improved range/accuracy across Units 1–6 language through integrated tasks (LO5).
