Purpose and content of the course

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to analyze and examine the basic dynamics of Turkish Foreign Policy, starting from the last period of the Ottoman Empire until today. It is aimed to provide students with information about the foreign policy and decision-making processes that Turkey has followed from its founding until today. Therefore, presenting academic knowledge about the history of Turkish foreign policy will enable students to both comprehend the developments in Turkish foreign policy from a certain historical perspective and to make predictions about future foreign policy practices and decision-making processes.
Course Objective: The Turkish Foreign Policy course identifies the phases in which foreign policy theory and practice have changed in the period from the establishment of Turkey to the present day and discusses each period in detail. This course focuses on the fundamental changes that Turkish foreign policy has undergone in the context of the international system in which Turkey is a part, and therefore international developments and regional factors. In addition, the system of alliances that Turkey has entered, the basic foreign policy problems it encounters with the actors in the international system and its neighbors, and the decision-making processes will also be among the topics that will be discussed.
